Obviously growing up in DC I never got to experience happy hours (I mean, duh, I was like 12), but now that I’m living here and working, happy hours have become my jam. While there are many fantastic places for after-work drinks, the best kind in DC are happy hours until 8. Extended happy hours are my favorite because I can spend even longer hanging out with friends and not feel like I’m under a time crunch because there is no way I’m paying full price.
Happy hours until 7 are dime a dozen, but happy hours until 8: now those are much harder to find. But I’ve tried them so you don’t have to (I know, taking one for the team, you’re welcome).
Whether you’re living in DC and looking for some new happy hour haunts or you’re visiting and looking for the best places to enjoy your evening and the best bang for your buck, I got you.
Best Happy Hours in DC Until 8
The Front Page
This is my very favorite new bar and it’s located at Dupont Circle (which is terribly and dangerously convenient to work). The Front Page is awesome because its happy hour goes until 8, the drinks are cheap and the food is delicious.
They have $3 rail drinks (I’ll take four g&ts please), $4 house wine, $5 margaritas and $5 happy hour specials for food. They give you a generous pour for wine (more than anywhere I’ve ever seen) so it’s actually great value. As for food, I personally love the loaded nachos and jalapeńo poppers.
Who needs real dinner when you have nachos like that? Not me!
Be warned, The Front Page frequently has events (like the time I showed up only for it to be someone’s 21st birthday and half the restaurant was reserved) so you may have to stand. Think of it this way – you’ve chosen somewhere super popular! Go you!
The Bottom Line
Located near Farragut North and Farragut West, this dive bar is hidden away underground and has an excellent happy hour until 8. Sure, The Bottom Line isn’t the classiest place on earth, think more your college bar than high society, but it’s still cheap and a fun vibe. Here you’ll find $4 rail drinks and shock top pints.
I went here with some friends after work (mainly because it was cheap and close) but I was pleasantly surprised. It stays pretty quiet until about 6 or 7 though so the last hour can get pretty busy.
Quarter + Glory
U Street Corridor is known for its unique bars, cafes and restaurants, and Quarter + Glory is one of my favorites in the area, and not just because their happy hour goes until 8. It’s dark inside, but this American-themed bar has got a cool vibe, great music and I’ll never tire of going.
There’s $4 grilled cheese that’s to die for and cocktails are mostly $7, beer is $4 and wine is $5. This isn’t the cheapest price you’ll find in the city, but if you want to take a step back in time to Old America, then this is the place for you.
Black Jack only has happy hour until 8 Tuesday through Thursday, but that’s still three days more than you can get at many places. All drafts are half price and you can get $5 wine. Unfortunately, their happy hour food isn’t that great of a deal, ranging from $7 to $11, so I usually don’t snack here like I do at other places.
Not only does Kingfisher have happy hour until 8, but they also have FREE bingo nights on Mondays. I mean, sure, we’re not 90, but that doesn’t mean you can’t enjoy a fun game of bingo every once and a while. And if bingo isn’t you’re thing, no worries, they have trivia night on Tuesdays. Get your game face on.
This basement bar is located at Logan Circle, this is a popular going out area and even if you don’t want to eat here, you’ll have dozens of cheap options nearby. You could seriously party all night here.
Happy gets you $2 off of all drinks, which can get you beers as cheap as $3. And the best part? Happy hour is seven days a week. Yes, seven! Every day! You have no idea how long I searched for this. *Choir sings*
Another Dupont Circle bar (can you tell I’ve got favorite areas?), this speakeasy will convince you you’re living in the Great Gatsby era and that’s pretty awesome. There are other bars with similar concepts, but I find they’re prohibitively expensive because many of them haven’t got happy hours (seriously, don’t go to Copycat in the H Street Corridor unless you want to go broke in one night).
Now, I will tell you the drinks aren’t dirt cheap and there aren’t many of them. In fact, only four drinks are $6 and that’s the happy hour, but you come to this place for its vibe and the fact you can drink cheaper until later.
I would highly recommend this place but you may need to ask what’s on the happy hour as it changes and they don’t often advertise it a lot. But I promise you, it’s there!
Bin 1301 Wine Bar
Although the name of this bar sounds unpleasant (if you’re British that is) it’s a super cool place in the heart of U Street Corridor (we like the word corridor in DC in case you haven’t noticed).
Select foods are $5 and all happy hour wine and cocktails are $6 and you’ve got a pretty wide selection. The vibes are great and it’s usually packed so if you’re like me and tend to lag a little after work, the liveliness of this place will wake you right up.
And you know what? On Mondays (ugh, worst night of the week) happy hour goes all night long. If that’s not the most glorious thing ever to brighten your Monday I don’t know what is.
These 7 happy hours in DC until 8pm will keep you going all week long. Great prices, live music, journeys back in time and in some of the coolest areas of the city, you won’t regret going to any of these. And you know what? Even if you don’t drink – you’ll still enjoy them! There’s something for everyone.
If you know of any other awesome bars in DC with extended happy hours, please do let me know!
